Cody Ambrose Turns Four

Four years ago tomorrow, on May 1, 2002, Cody Ambrose Needham joined 2our little family. Here is a picture from that day, which was also Bailey's first look at his new little brother. For that matter, it was also Cody's first look at his new big brother. Here is another picture from Cody's first day.

Yesterday afternoon we had a little shin-dig for the Birthday Boy. Before that though, Cody helped make and decorate his birthday cake. (Those are candy sprinkles on the cake, and Cody insisted it was also Mavis' birthday too, so we gave her proper recognition. Mavis is a train on Sodor Island, from Thomas The Tank Engine fame.)

Cody had a great time at the party, sharing cake and pizza with his friends, spending time with them and with his brother and making secret wishes with themtoo. All in all, it was a terrific party for a terrific boy.

We hope your family had a great weekend too.

Winter's Last Gasp?

At least, we hope it is. Full size image. We're kind of hoping to open the pool in a few weeks, so this cold snap has to just move on along now....

Here is what it looked like standing on our front porch and looking down the street this morning.

Winter, it has been nice knowing you, but it is time for you to move along now. We'll see you again this November, but until then, there's no real reason to stick around.

Sara Evans - Star Power

Full size image. Have you guys heard of Sara Evans? If you haven't yet, you will, probably. Especially if, like us, you like great music.

We saw Sara Evans in concert Saturday night at Joliet's Rialto Square Theater. We had second row (aisle) seats. It was an amazing concert. And, as shown, we got to meet Sara after the concert. Sara complimented CarCar on her blouse. CarCar was walking on air afterwards.

(Mental note to self - compliment Carolyn's blouses more often!)

Sara Evans. HIGHLY recommended music. Available on I-Tunes, for the uninitiated. An awesome performance. An awesone artist.

We need to go to small-venue concerts more often. Especially for musicians we really like.

Oh, and here is a picture that Sara Evans signed for Carolyn, after she complimented CarCar's blouse.

John Bailey Needham

Very early on the morning of January 12, 2001, Carolyn and I were waiting patiently for a call from Copley hospital. The call we were waiting for was supposed to inform us that a delivery room was available, so Carolyn could have labor induced.

(Okay, the truth is, we were not actually waiting patiently, so much as we were calling every ten minutes or so, and eventually we just quit calling and drove over there.)

Shortly after we arrived, Carolyn was all prepped up and labor was induced. The picture above was take the next day, when Bailey (as we had decided to call him) was less than a day old. He clocked in at a whopping 9 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 21 inches long, at that point.

Today, he is five years old.

Young Bailey has been a constant source of pleasure and amazement to both of us. He is a kind, sensitive and engaging little boy. We can scarcely remember a time when we were not parents, and we would not trade one day of our lives with him, for a year's worth of days without him.

Happy Birthday, Bailey - may you have many more years, providing us with the same pleasure and amazement that you've provided already. We, in turn, promise to do everything we can to provide you with a warm, loving and nurturing environment in which you can flourish and accomplish everything you desire.

Thanksgiving, 2005

Like, it seems, every year, we have much to be thankful for, as we approach this excellent American holiday.

We are very fortunate - blessed, even - to have family and friends with which to share Thanksgiving. We'll be spending the holiday with Carolyn's family this year. Carolyn's three sisters, all spouses, and all children (eight of them) plus Carolyn's parents will be spending most of the week together. We're going to take this opportunity to get a large family portrait taken - I'll post it here when we get it, assuming that any picture with me in it qualifies as web-worthy.

We are thankful for our health and the health of our children, and the health of our extended family.

We are thankful to live in a nation that is at war, but that is relatively peaceful at home. We are especially thankful for the service of of all the members of our armed forces, even if we view some of their present deployments and unnecessary folly by the Bush administration.

We are grateful for friends and neighbors, who enrich our lives in ways great and small.

On the eve of this great American holiday, we'd also like to offer all of you a happy, healthy and spectacular Thanksgiving, 2005.

Pool Update

Except for the pool cover, construction of the pool is complete. There is still some landscaping to be done around the pool, but that can wait until next spring, when we can open the pool for swimming for the first time.

(Full size picture here.)

The new sod is in and looks really great, and it appears to be taking well. The contractor did a fantastic job re-grading the yard, and the sod guys did a really nice job laying the sod.

All that is left, really, is fixing the fence that had to be taken down to get the equipment into the yard. That should happen this week.

It goes without saying, spring cannot come soon enough for us!Two more pictures of the new yard:

Our Little Corner of the World Wide Web

Why is it such a good thing? Every once in a while, something like this happens.

Back on September 5th, we posted this little update about our last Kane County Cougars game of the summer.

In response to that post, we recently received this message, with a title, simply, of "web page:"

"I was just doing a search to see if I could see how Freddy Sandoval was doing in the Mexican League, and I came across your posting. We are Kernels Season Ticket Holders, and went to the last series in Kane County. Freddy is a wonderful young man and was a great Christian who dealt with our children and all children in a super manner. We too hope he makes it big, and remembers the little ones along the way. We have three children 6, 8, and 10. We see our last series next season is in Kane County, so we will be back.

"Enjoyed your site."

We were at the same game! This was followed up with another message, titled "Kernels Ball:"

"Sorry to bug you again, but I didn’t read your whole posting until sharing it with my husband. TJ Stanton is one of our other favorite players and I am glad that your children each got a ball. My 10 year old left the Kane County Field with TJ’s hat, and my daughter with Jordan Renz’s hat. As you know with season tickets,(and my children are a bit older than yours) the kids became good friends with the players being they spent so many of their summer days at the ball park."

Obviously, these e-mails did not bug us - it was sweet of someone so kind to e-mail us, about shared experiences, that we never even knew we shared, until we received the e-mails.

The world wide web is a wonderful thing - it allows people to share these common experiences in kind, thoughtful, and wonderful ways. Thank you, anonymous e-mailer, for dropping us a line! You made our day.

So, just doing our part - here is a new link to the Kernels website, and here is where one could go, if they, say, wanted to support the Kernels by purchasing some Kernels gear!

Finally!

Full size picture here

Today is finally cement-pouring day. Obviously, for the boys, having a cement truck in the driveway unloading cement is a tremendous pleasure.

The construction crew is presently about halfway done pouring the concrete.

Here is where the new patio hooks up with the existing patio.

Later we are going to go outside, while the cement is still a little soft, and stamp the two boys' handprints into it. More pictures later.....

UPDATE, 3:30 p.m. WOW, that was fast!

(Full size picture.)

The concrete is in and we think it looks fantastic. Here is another picture from the guest bedroom.

And those handprints? Here they areHere is another look. Here is just Bailey's handprint. And here is Cody's.

Pool Update

Have time for a quick pool update? As you can see from the small picture above (full size picture here), the pool is filled - albeit with presently somewhat cloudy water. What do you want, the pool is in a construction zone!

The patio expansion is also all framed up, which you can see here and here.

That's it for now - the concrete for the patio should start getting poured Monday or Teusday of next week. Also, on Monday, they should be installing the pool's auto-cover.

Yes, things will be wrapping up with the pool construction just in time to close the pool down for the year....HA!

Ah well, in the words of Cubs fans everywhere, just wait until next year!

Backyard Construction - Pool Delivery Day

By now, most people know that we are having an in-ground pool installed in our backyard - this was the backyard construction project that we've had underway.

Yes, this was probably not the optimal time to have a pool installed - late September/early October to have an in-ground pool installed? Sub-optimal, to be sure. But it was the time that worked for us, from a personal and financial standpoint - so, there ya go.

We ordered the pool from Go Blue Water, and the model we ordered is the Orion shown here.

Here the crew is attaching a crane to the pool on the delivery truck, and here they are lifting the pool off the truck with the crane.

Here goes the pool over and around the house, and here the crew nudges the new pool through the space between our house and our neighbors. Note that at this point, the pool is upside down.

By releasing one cord, they were able to flip the pool over(and, I'm told, almost take out the little crab apple tree in the foreground of the picture - happily, the tree survived the experience!).

Eventually, they were able to lower the new pool into the holethat they had dug over the weekend.

Right now, we've got a hose putting water into the pool, mostly to weigh it down. The crew will come later in the week to finish filling up the pool with water from a truck.

Improbably, when they delivered our pool, there were actuallytwo pools on the truck! I'm told that this week, two other families are having pools installed by the same crew!

We're happy to be a part of this "trend."

Our Backyard

Remember at the end of the last post where we made a veiled reference to "some interesting and fun" things going on in our backyard?

Well, it has not exactly started yet.

Pictured above is our backyard, taken from the guest bedroom window earlier today. As you can see, our lawn is in a state of great disrepair.

We're in a serious drought region, and long ago this summer, we suspended watering of the back lawn.

But, construction starts soon, on something new and cool in the backyard.

Here and here are pictures of some of the equipment that was dropped off today in advance of construction, and here is yet another picture of our grossly damaged back lawn.

In short order, we expect to not care how bad the grass used to look!

Farewell to Summer

By way of an end of summer missive, we'd like to start with a hope that everyone reading this had as spectacular a Labor Day weekend as we did.

Certainly there are many Americans who have less than us, and, notably, there are many Americans that have less than they had several weeks ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of Katarina - and with their families. We've done what we could for the victims, donating, praying. Mostly we've tried to emphasize to Bailey and Cody why it is vital for all Americans to come to the aid of their fellow citizens, when the need is great and when one's resources allow.

It was an awful thing that happened in America's Southern states as a result of the storm - we've tried to do what we can for the victims, and we've done what we can to teach our sons about the situation.

Someone had a birthday this weekend as well - see if you can guess who, from this picture. Those are Harry Potter hats, and the birthday "boy" is in the middle. Someone turns 45 on Tuesday....'nuff said about that! Truly, though, it was a fun birthday, pizzas were prepared on the grill, a three-layer chocolate birthday cake was consumed, and genrally a fun time was had by all.

Following that, we had our last of the season tickets for theKane County Cougars today. We always have a LOT of fun at these games and we have pretty good seats down the third base line by the visitor's bullpen. Today, a fine fellow from theCedar Rapids Kernels named Freddy Sandoval (number 21, if you're scoring at home) walked up and gave Cody this ball. Obviously, we hope Sandoval makes the bigs - not because we can then sell the ball on E-Bay, mind you. It is not even autographed. We hope Sandoval makes the big leagues because like most people, we believe that one GOOD turn deserves another. And Freddy Sandoval's good turn today certainly made Cody's day!

But wait! There is more! Later in the game (and regrettably, when Daddy was off buying hotdogs and chicken fingers and french fries for a certain ravenous horde), a foul ball was hit down the third base line, and was retrieved by a certainnumber 35 from the visiting Kernels (second from the right in the picture), one T.J. Stanton. This ball was promptly handed to Bailey.

UPDATE September 6th, 5:30 a.m.: Just realized that this update did not include any pictures of Carolyn, which is wholly unnacceptable, but is corrected here! Here is a picture of Carolyn and Cody with his aforementioned baseball, here is a picture or CarCar with both boys. Glad that oversight is fixed!

So yes, we left the last Cougars game of the year with a baseball for each boy. Not a bad way to end a summer.

Of course, this was a day game, so when we got home, the boy-o's were still up for some playing. And play they did, play to exhaustion, as shown here, with their friend Ben. Playing in Ben's Geo Tractor. Playing with their monster trucks, playing with Baby Taylor. Just, generally, playing.

Kids should play a lot during the summer months. Ours certainly did. Happily, Carolyn and I had many opportunities to play with them.

School starts Tuesday for Bailey and Cody. And summer is largely over, though there will (hopefully) be plenty of warm days left in September and early October.

On that note, we have some interesting and fun things going on in our backyard over the next few weeks! Hopefully we'll be able to put some updates here about them, so stop by and see what's going on!

We hope everyone who is reading this had a grand weekend, and a grand summer. Certainly we did.

Any Early Political Endorsement

For President? For the U.S. Senate? For mayor of Chicago or one of the local races on the horizon?

No.

Management here at Needhamfamily.net are hereby officially endorsing Kevin McKague for City Council of Davison, MI.

We've never met Kevin, nor have we been to Davison. But we don't want that to stand in the way of our taking a stand.

Kevin is a young man who is sensible, pragmatic, and left of center. He is a "Liberal Christian family man", according to his bio at the Detroit News Weblog site.

Editor's Note: Management here at Needhamfamily.net once blogged there too

Anyway, read Kevin's blogs. Learn about him. And, if you find yourself eligible to vote in the November 8th election in Davison, Michigan, please consider voting for him.

Just as importantly, if you agree that American would be better off if young, intelligent, well spoken and decent people like Kevin served their communities, like Kevin is trying to do, consider making a donation to his campaign.

We'll be making one as soon as we can figure out how to.

UPDATE: Here is a story in the Flint Journal. From the story, it appears that the City Council is elected in an at-large vote, rather than specific districts.

And here is the website for Kevin's campaign. You can make a contribution to the campaign using Pay-Pal from a link on the website. (We just did.) Or contact Kevin directly at NewsFromDavison@aol.com.

Baseball Practice

As some might already know, Bailey and Cody have been playing baseball this summer. T-ball, actually. Today was there last practice. Since I was home from work yesterday and today, I decided to take in their practice and take a few pictures.

Pictured above are, from left to right, Cody (looking away), Bailey, and Ben Scott. They're on the same team.

The team name is the "Red Pickles." (I kid you not.)

Here is Bailey running the bases. Here he is playing the field, and here is Bailey and Cody leaving the field.

On to Cody....

First of all, Cody needs some help with his throwing motion - I'm going to be working on that with him for the rest of this summer. However, he is a demon on the basepaths! Here he is racing for first base after getting a hit, and here he is going from second to third base. Cody is also an enthusiastic fielder, though he did not get any tries at today's practice.

Alas, T-ball is done for this year, but we're going to keep playing.

Knowingly

Last week, Lawrence O'Donnell broke the news that Karl Rove was the White House leaker who gave the name of a CIA covert agent to three reporters. He broke the story on the Huffington Post and the McLaughlin Group.

On July 4th he parsed Rove's lawyer's non-denial denial:

"In Luskin's next damage control session with the press, let's see if any reporter can get him to drop the word 'knowingly' from the never-disclosed-classified-information bit."

Some would call it treason to release the name of a CIA covert agent to the press, just to provide cover for one's boss, who was criticized by the agent's husband.

But I'd just call it typical of Karl Rove.

Hat tip: Andrew Sullivan, of all places.
